Every time I see this photo of Rummy shaking hands with Saddam, all I can hear is him saying to Saddam, “Man, am I glad to meet you! I can’t wait to start selling you arms and helping you any way I can! So nice to meet ya Saddam!”.

He had good intentions and did some remarkable things. When he came to power only 1/3 of Iraqis knew how to read and write. He made 100% of the new generation of Iraqis literate by making school compulsory and universities cheap.

Many foreigners from Jordan,Egypt,etc went to Iraq to complete their degree. Problem was after the Iranian revolution there was a rise of Shia radicalism and pro Iranians in Iraq, which meant that it would be easy for Iran to take over Iraq in the neat future.

Saddam felt that since Iran was still weak, he should attack it immediately to prevent it from ever becoming a superpower. He also had other reasons: Iraq had no coastline, and Iran occupied Arab areas. He wanted a place called Shatt Al Arab, very small place and worth nothing to Iran since Iran has thousands of kilometers of coastline. He was backed by America and the whole world and had a superior army, so it made perfect sense. But America, fearing that if Iraq took Iran, they would become too powerful, started backing Iran and sold them weapons

. After 8 years of war, both Iran and Iraq were destroyed,and America gained billions of dollars from selling weapons. Saddam became increasingly patriotic and America still feared Iraq might become a powerful country, so they started funding GCC countries and give them protection on one condition: that they lower the oil prices, this made it impossible for Iraq to develop its economy and rebuild the country, Saddam met with the U.S foreign minister and said he was going to invade Kuwait, the minister didn't object and said "we have no opinion" so Saddam invaded Kuwait,

but only to get the money Kuwait had pledged Iraq to fight the war against Iran, as both Iran and Iraq had been funded by other countries and Kuwait was still owing, and America immediately declared war, Saddam refused to leave Kuwait,so America bombed everything in Iraq:government buildings,bridges,hospitals,etc.After America destroyed Iraq,

They made the sanctions which killed over a million Iraqis and prevented Iraq again from developing for 13 years until 2003. During this time however Saddam had gathered the entire country's engineers and rebuilt everything America destroyed. He is hated by pro Iranians and Kurds. He had many Shia and Kurdish ministers and generals with him, so he wasn't racist, he only imprisoned Kurdish rebels,religious people and pro Iranians.
